A quick thought:

Saying that video game stories are inherently bad because most of them are predictable cliched RPGS, is like saying that no book is good because they're all romance novels (in case you didn't know, romance is by far the most popular genre in the english language, something like 55% of all books sold).

I agree that most games have terrible stories. But so do most books. And I think that a lot of the storytelling problems that games have is due to the fact that it's difficult to design something with an intelligent story which is still interactive. Difficult, but not impossible. I think a game like "Grim Fandango" has all of the story of a great book (plus a sense of humor, which counts for a lot), and while the story for "Chrono Trigger" might READ like a cliche RPG plotline, there is absolutely an art to creating a plotline both structured and open-ended, even if the intended audience is 13-year old boys.
