I'm a retro-gamer myself looking back at the halcyon days of the Commodore 64 and Amiga with bright bushy eyes. Only problem is I can't find all the games I used to love on the emulator - Iridis Alpha for instance.

And it's not like every game from earlier generations was good - on the contrary, the thing that pretty much killed Atari off was a flood of inferior products. Later Nintendo tried to instate more quality control (by limiting game publishers to only five titles per year), but there were still an awful lot of shitty and generic NES games. So yes, a lot of the biggest games out now are uncreative and unoriginal, but that's just because the game industry has grown into another Hollywood (along with the big Hollywood myth that audiences just want more of the same). But I think when you do the math there are as many original games coming out these days, it's just that they're not the ones all the hype money is going into.

I know they're the gaming equivalent of Jerry Bruckheimer flicks, big, dumb red-state gun-packin' freedom-lovin' killfests, but in the world of videogames that sits right with me; I just freaking love these things. Do I get kicked out of the 'liberal/indie/punk' club now Mr. Mackaye? Can I come back after Black Ops comes out later this year and my friend with the PS3 buys it?
